Here's John's review for Only Moloney from The Melbourne Age....
This week I saw Englishman John Moloney at the Victoria Hotel. Moloney is making his first appearance at the festival and hasn't arrived with much fanfare. One reason for this might be because he's part of a dying breed among comedians - he tells jokes.
That's right, over the course of the hour Moloney just wanders about the stage and, in a soft voice, delivers gags. We don't learn much about his life and times (though we do learn a little), we aren't given a sermon on the ills of the world and he doesn't try to touch our souls or make us think deeply about society and our place in it.
Instead, we get an entertaining hour of carefully crafted gags about language, relationships, children and all those other staples of stand-up. It's not groundbreaking, but it works. There's something refreshing about a comedian who's not trying to change the world or is obsessed with pop culture. If traditional stand-up, low-key comedy is your thing, check him out.
